This is what I’ve been working on this month. Big statement ‘jewels’. Made from porcelain paper clay, they are both lightweight and stronger than porcelain. These have evolved from the Elephant Beads I began making just as I was graduating from Bath Spa University MA Ceramics in 2018. Those were simpler with black / white textured surfaces, whereas these incarnations feature all the wonderful glazes I’ve been experimenting with over the past year. Generously applying both matte and gloss colour on the form enhances the found textures and surfaces. Inspiration has drifted in from the beach – rusted broken bits of metal, shells; particularly the mauvyblue limpets at Lyme Regis, childhood memories of rock pool hunting and seaweed.
