A local farmer gave his hedgerows recently an early Covid haircut, which left a poor little wren literally hopping up and down, quite distraught. However, I was surprised at how quickly the ferns recovered and their limegreeny frills stood out against the darker ivy and grass. I used a fern leaf as surface decoration to describe a fish spine because they are such a beautiful form and could resemble (for me) an inside-out fish.
